Mel Barrett
was born in 1990 into the inspirational setting of the Monterey Peninsula, a community that celebrates art and nature. The colorful, bold statement of Barrett’s multimedia artwork resonates with California’s Pop Surrealist art movement. Barrett’s body of work is a juxtaposition of various mediums and concepts created from traditional art media, such as oil and acrylic paint, as well as various forms of non-traditional media. Mel’s vibrant style shines through each of her creations, and her artwork is intended to evoke an emotional response whether she is examining the human psyche, exploring environmental issues, creating scenes of paradise or devising colorfully abstracted compositions.
In In 2015, Mel Barrett was selected as a featured artist in the Inaugural Juried Art Auction at the Sunset Center in Carmel CA. Additionally, Barrett has participated in a variety of solo and group shows, including the 2014 Carmel Arts Alive in Carmel’s San Carlos Square, the 2013 showing of Conscious Canvas, a solo show at the Cat’s Meow in Monterey, CA, a group show in 2012 at The Ironside Gallery in Arcata, CA, and her 2011 solo exhibition, Express Yourself, at Humboldt State University’s Karshner Lounge in Arcata CA. Mel graduated cum laude from Humboldt State University (HSU) in 2012. There she earned a Bachelor of the Arts degree with emphasis in Art History and Studio Art and a Certificate of Museum and Gallery Practices. Since her graduation from HSU, Mel has returned to her roots in the Monterey Peninsula, and she has been involved with several local art organizations including the Carmel Art Association, the Monterey Museum of Art and the Monterey Peninsula College Art Gallery. Mel continues to live and create on the Monterey Peninsula.
